Miscellaneous ‘10
01) We Are Invisible
10 January, 2010
Synopsis: Despite being Christ’s church, we are invisible to our community (and perhaps each other). We’ve often thought of our purpose (work) in terms of “evangelism, edification, and benevolence.” While these are not incorrect, this lesson encourages us to think of the church’s purpose from a different angle, by examining five parables of Jesus that teach us that the church is to be a home, influence society, valuable and a net. (Some concepts in this lesson were adapted from Seth Godin.)
02) Considering Our Communion Together
28 February, 2010
Synopsis: When we examine the establishment, examples and
correction given concerning the Lord’s Supper we understand that
our Lord Jesus desires that Christians must partake of the Lord’s
supper together on the first day of the week.
03) Right vs. Wrong
28 February, 2010
Synopsis: Can we know absolutely whether something is right or wrong? What is our
standard of morality? The only absolute standard we can have is to
look back to the one who created us and imitate Him. We know
right and wrong because it is the very character of God.
04) “Let Marriage Be Held in Honor” (Hebrews 13.4; Genesis 39.1-12)
28 March, 2010
Synopsis: God provided the marriage relationship as the proper (and only) outlet for sexual pleasure. Those who indulge their sexual desires outside of marriage
(fornicators and adulterers) will be judged by God. Instruction for
overcoming sexual temptations can be found in examining
Potiphar’s wife and Joseph.
05) “You Are A Hypocrite!”
13 June, 2010
Synopsis: A charge often brought against Christians. This lesson
helps us to understand what a hypocrite is and what affect it
should have on my faith.
06) Will Those Who Do Not Hear the Gospel Be Lost?
27 June, 2010
Synopsis: We are often asked about those who do not hear the
gospel whether they will be saved. The scriptures teach us that we
are all lost because of sin and the only solution to sin is Jesus.
07) It Was the Worst of Times (Psalm 37)
25 July, 2010
Synopsis: Seeing all the evil in the world is vexing to the righteous. Psalm 37 teaches us that God knows what is happening, that He will act, and how we should
live before Him: in trust, delight, doing right, and waiting for Him.
(This lesson, for the most part, is completely the work of Joe Griffen.)
08) “I Was Healed!” Part 1 (John 20.30-31)
1 August, 2010
Synopsis: There are many who claim the ability to do miracles today. What does the Bible teach about the validity of such miracles? This lessons examines what is meant by the words sign, wonder and power; and the purpose for such miracles. The
conclusion is that miracles are no longer needed today, they have
fulfilled their purpose.
09) The Day of Small Things
15 August, 2010
Synopsis: Sometimes it seems difficult to really think of ourselves as a glorious church due to small size. But it is vital to remember that God achieves great purposes through small things. By looking at the wisdom of small things, we learn the importance
of preparation, habitation, cooperation, and courage. By examining
the instruction to rebuilders of the temple, we remember to be
strong, to work and not fear.
10) “I Was Healed!” Part 2 (John 20.30-31)
22 August, 2010
Synopsis: This is the second part of a lesson discussing modern miracles. Having shown in
the first lesson that the Bible teaches that miracles have served their
purpose, this lesson answers how we may explain the so-called
modern miracles. Three explanations: the power of the Devil,
fakers, and psychosomatic illnesses.
11) A Great Calm (Mark 4.35-41)
5 September, 2010
Synopsis: There is only one real solution to the storms of life: Jesus. If you face great storms and long from a great calm; if you are afraid and have little faith
then cry out to Jesus. Three lessons: Jesus is on the boat with you;
He cares; and cry out to Him when afraid.
12) Is Anything Too Hard for Jehovah? (Jeremiah 32)
24 October, 2010
Synopsis: Jeremiah is in prison, in a doomed city besieged by an army, and Jehovah tells him to buy a field. It doesn’t make sense, but Jeremiah obeys. Then asks
God why. Jehovah’s answer reveals the reason that Jeremiah (and
the people) should have hope. We can learn from this why we too
should live as a people of hope.
13) Not All Baptisms Are the Same (Acts 19.1-7)
26 November, 2010
Synopsis: The Bible teaches that baptism for the forgiveness of sins is necessary for our salvation. The example of the 12 disciples in Ephesus helps us
understand that not all “baptisms” are the same. There are four
aspects of baptism that saves: 1) Proper Candidate; 2) Proper
Purpose; 3) Proper Authority; 4) Proper Action.
14) How Honest Are You?
28 November, 2010
Synopsis: Honesty is so difficult that we even struggle being honest with ourselves, as exemplified by Saul and David. Paul gives us for points that help us
toward honesty: 1) We are not to be like the world; 2) We are now
like Christ; 3) We are brethren; and 4) Be prepared to do good for
others.
15) Heaven Holds All to Me (Matthew 6.19-21)
26 December, 2010
Synopsis: There is nothing more precious than heaven. Job reminds us that we must be steadfast in our faith in God, no matter what happens. Three reasons to
look forward to heaven: 1) All the treasures of this earth are not
worth more than my soul; 2) Treasures of heaven are priceless; and
3) Jesus prepared the way for me.
